Chair Alisha White called the meeting to order at 3:30 PM. Announcements: Keith Boeckelman, ex-officio from CAS, had no announcements. Christopher Pynes, ex-officio from the Provosts office reminded the body that Undergraduate Research Day is April 16. You may be receiving requests to judge podium presentations. Alisha White noted that the final report had been submitted to Faculty Senate. It will be discussed April 8. Lori Baker-Sperry will present to CGE on April 17. Officers will be selected, and we hope to have the new members join us for this meeting. White asked for consideration of the minutes from the previous meeting. Josh Averbeck moved to approve and Clifton Ealy seconded a motion to approve the minutes. The motion passed with one abstention. White raised the issue of the composition of CGE now that Multicultural and Human Well Being are no longer general education categories. Faculty Senate chair Jeremy Robinette would welcome input as to how the Council should be constituted in the future. Amy Carr argued that a multicultural representative is no longer necessary. Averbeck concurred that there is no need to have representatives in a category that is no longer general education, but that those members could move to at-large. Pynes suggested that the Council should seek further input from Faculty Senate on this question. Averbeck posed the question of whether the category representatives on CGE have to come from departments that offer gen ed. Gregory Baramidze noted that his department currently did not offer gen ed. Pynes held that departments that dont offer gen ed should still be represented, since this is a university-level requirement, but that the Faculty Senate should ultimately decide this question. Averbeck agreed that a diversity of departments should be represented. Baramidze asked whether the new CGE members would actually be seated in the next meeting, and White said she would find out. Baramidze further raised the issue of postponing elections for new officers until early next year. Pynes noted that this practice is not uncommon. After further discussion White agreed to postpone the elections until Fall. White also announced that she was having surgery and would miss the May meeting. Either someone else could preside, or, CGE could finish up its work at the April 17 meeting. Elgin Mannion moved and Carr seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed unanimously, and the meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM.
